Oxfam India is releasing the 2020 India Inequality Report — On Women’s Backs — on 28th Oct. The latest NSSO survey has revealed that the average Indian woman spends 243 minutes, which is almost ten times of the 25 minutes that an average man spends on household unpaid care work. The gendered division of labour between the caregiver woman and the breadwinner man breeds gender inequality. What makes it unequal is that the work that women do, is not valued as productive formal labour that brings in income, their needs and rights go unnoticed. Our panelists Prof Diane Elson and Prof Jayati Ghosh, in a discussion moderated by Rupali Mehra, will unpack and highlight the intersections between violence against women and the unpaid care work they perform.
